Yobe State Announces Public Holiday on Tuesday to Mark Beginning of Muslim New Year

The Yobe State Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448AH, following approval from Governor Mai Mala Buni, who acknowledged the significance of the Islamic calendar and the state's tradition of observing the start of the Hijrah year.

This declaration was made in a circular issued on Monday, signed by the Head of Service, Abdullahi Shehu, which stated that the holiday is meant to allow workers and residents to observe the first day of Muharram, marking the start of the Islamic New Year.

According to the circular, Governor Mai Mala Buni approved the declaration of Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448AH, which corresponds to 1st Muharram.

The state government instructed all civil servants, public institutions, and organisations to strictly adhere to the holiday directive, with government offices and public establishments expected to observe the holiday.

Normal official activities and work are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, 17th June, 2026, as stated in the circular, which outlined the government's expectations for the holiday.

Residents of the state were encouraged by the government to use the occasion to reflect on the past year and offer prayers for peace, stability, and prosperity as the new Islamic year begins.

The government also extended its well-wishes to all Muslim faithful and residents, expressing its desire for a peaceful, prosperous, and blessed Islamic New Year.

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah, commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah and marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar observed by Muslims worldwide.
