Yobe Governor Buni Embarks on Ambitious Project to Construct and Rehabilitate Schools Across the State

The Yobe State Government has revealed that it has built 929 classrooms and rebuilt 301 schools statewide, in a bid to bolster the education sector and increase access to high-quality learning opportunities.

This move is part of a broader effort to enhance the state's educational infrastructure, with Governor Mai Mala Buni also establishing 10 Government Girls’ Senior Secondary Schools to boost girls' education and encourage higher enrolment rates.

Data from the Yobe State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education indicates that these initiatives aim to address gaps in infrastructure, improve teaching conditions, and expand educational opportunities throughout the state.

The establishment of the 10 girls' schools specifically targets the issue of female students dropping out of school after completing their junior secondary education, according to the ministry.

The ministry explained that the 10 Government Girls’ Senior Secondary Schools were set up to tackle the challenge of female students not continuing their education beyond junior secondary school, and to promote increased enrolment and completion rates among girls.

In addition to the new schools, the ministry reported that 929 new classrooms were constructed, while 748 existing ones were renovated to improve the learning environment for students.

The reconstruction of 301 schools is also expected to enhance the state's educational infrastructure and increase access to education.

To improve the quality of instruction, the administration has recruited 7,230 teachers and provided training to 12,714 teaching personnel, according to the ministry.

The government has also provided 125 staff quarters, particularly in rural areas, to enhance teachers' welfare and encourage effective service delivery.

Furthermore, the ministry reported that 275 toilet facilities and 47 solar-powered boreholes were installed in schools to improve sanitation and access to clean water.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to revamp the education sector and improve learning conditions throughout Yobe State, the ministry stated.

The state government allocates approximately N6bn annually to its school feeding programme and around N3bn yearly to cover examination fees for students taking WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS, and BECE.

Additionally, 150 students benefit from the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges scholarship scheme, which is funded by the state government at a cost of over N2.2bn per year.

The ministry also noted that 14 Mega and Model Schools have been established in major towns to provide modern learning facilities and reduce overcrowding in existing schools.

According to the ministry, these initiatives demonstrate the administration's commitment to improving educational access, enhancing teaching capacity, and creating a conducive learning environment across Yobe State.
