Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has revealed the personal reasons behind the emotional scenes that followed his historic FIFA World Cup debut against Spain.

The veteran shot-stopper played a pivotal role as Cape Verde held the European giants to a goalless draw in Georgia, producing a string of crucial saves to frustrate Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Vozinha’s performance not only earned him the Man of the Match award but also saw him make history as the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut.

Despite the achievement, the 40-year-old was visibly emotional after the final whistle and later explained that thoughts of absent family members overwhelmed him.

The experienced shot-stopper emerged as a hero for Cape Verde, helping them secure an unexpected 0-0 draw against Luis de la Fuente’s team in Georgia.

At the conclusion of the match, Vozinha was overcome with emotion as he became the oldest goalkeeper to achieve a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut, making a total of seven saves.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, Vozinha stated that he was in tears after the game because his grandparents were unable to witness his participation on football’s grandest stage, having passed away a few years prior.

He said, “I cried after the game because I was raised by my grandparents during my childhood, and they could not be there.

“They passed away a few years ago. My mother was also unable to attend due to a visa issue and the costs associated with it. We could not arrange this in time.”

The emotional moment capped a memorable evening for the goalkeeper, who made seven saves to help his country secure a valuable point in its first-ever World Cup appearance.

Vozinha also set another milestone, becoming the oldest player to feature in a nation’s inaugural World Cup match, surpassing the previous mark held by Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room.

Reflecting on being named Man of the Match, the Chaves goalkeeper admitted the recognition exceeded his expectations.

“I never imagined anything like this,” Vozinha said regarding his recognition as Man of the Match in his World Cup debut.

He added, “I am incredibly proud to be named Man of the Match.”

The goalkeeper also spoke of his pride in representing Cape Verde on football’s biggest stage after the country’s difficult journey to qualification.

“It is an honour to represent the country I cherish. We come from a very small place, and our journey to qualification was quite challenging. Today, our dream was realised by competing against a team like Spain. I take great pride in everyone who contributed to that process,” he added.
