Why I’m not contesting Bauchi governorship -Health minister

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, has said his decision not to contest the Bauchi State governorship election in 2027 was informed by a desire to serve Nigeria at a broader level.

Pate made this known in a video message shared by Labari Daga Bauchi on Facebook on Sunday, where he acknowledged the widespread calls from residents of Bauchi State urging him to join the governorship race.

“I am aware of the calls by our people across the nooks and crannies for me to join the race, but this is also a time that it appears my service is needed beyond Bauchi,” he said.

The minister expressed gratitude for the support and trust reposed in him by the people of the state, noting that their encouragement reflects their confidence in his leadership.

He said, “There is no doubt that the people of Bauchi State have shown me great love. They have asked me to contest for the governorship position in the 2027 general elections.”

Despite the calls, Pate explained that after wide consultations with elders, youths, and other stakeholders, he resolved to prioritise national service.

“At this point, one must think carefully and seek Allah’s guidance in deciding whether to serve at the state, regional, or national level,” he added.

He emphasised that Nigeria currently requires collective contributions from its citizens, stressing that there are multiple ways to support national development beyond holding state office.

“Our country needs our contributions. There are many ways we can support the rebuilding of our nation, not just at the state level,” he said.

Pate assured Bauchi residents that his decision would not affect his commitment to their welfare.

“I want to assure the people of Bauchi State that they will never regret the love and trust they have shown me. I will continue to do everything within my power to improve lives,” he stated.

He reiterated his commitment to advancing healthcare, creating job opportunities for youths, and supporting vulnerable groups, including women and children.

The minister also pledged to remain actively involved in the political process, particularly in supporting credible candidates.

“I will ensure that candidates we support are individuals of integrity who are committed to the well-being of our people, not those who only appear during elections and disappear afterwards,” he said.

Pate further called for support for the administration of Bola Tinubu and candidates of the All Progressives Congress, noting that alignment between federal and state governments would enhance development.

He also advised youths to resist political manipulation, urging them to shun drug abuse, violence, and divisive politics.

n

“The youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the leaders of today. They must avoid anyone who seeks to divide them or use them for violence,” he said.

Pate concluded by thanking his supporters and reaffirming his dedication to public service.

“I will continue to dedicate myself to improving the lives of our people whenever I have the opportunity,” he added.
