Why I want to be NBA President – Badejo-Okunsanya

A presidential candidate in the forthcoming Nigerian Bar Association election, Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya (SAN), on Thursday said her ambition is driven by a desire to reposition the association to better serve the welfare and professional interests of lawyers across the country.

Speaking during a campaign visit to members of the Jalingo Branch of the NBA, Badejo-Okunsanya said the association must evolve beyond the perception that it primarily caters to private legal practitioners.

She noted that the NBA’s membership comprises lawyers in diverse areas of practice, including the public service, academia and corporate organisations, stressing that every member deserves equal attention and representation.

According to her, if elected, her administration will focus on improving members’ welfare, enhancing professional opportunities and strengthening the protection and dignity of legal practitioners.

“My desire is to reshape the Bar to become more responsive to the needs of its members. My ambition is to help lawyers earn better, live better and practise better.

“I have plans to restructure the Bar to make it more inclusive. I will also ensure that lawyers are adequately protected and accorded the respect they deserve,” she said.

The Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Agya, who received her, wished her success in the election and urged her to prioritise unity among NBA branches and strengthen the relationship between the Bar and the Bench if elected.

The Chairman of the NBA, Jalingo Branch, Dr Philimon Saredau, assured Badejo-Okunsanya of the support of members of the branch in the forthcoming election.

Also speaking, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Taraba State Ministry of Justice, Mr Sunday Maikerfi; a senior member of the Jalingo Bar, Mr John Okeze; and Mrs Ganki Nana Hassan pledged their support for Badejo-Okunsanya’s candidacy.

The Director-General of the campaign, Mr Aminu Gadanya (SAN), thanked members of the Jalingo Branch for their warm reception and expressed confidence in their support for Badejo-Okunsanya in the forthcoming NBA presidential election.
