WAEC pushes back cutoff date for 2026 GCE sign-ups to August 28

The West African Examinations Council, Nigeria, has prolonged the registration period for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, Second Series, giving applicants more time to sign up.

This development was announced by WAEC via a post on its X handle on Saturday, with the council specifying that the new cutoff date is now Friday, 28 August 2026.

In its statement, WAEC encouraged prospective candidates to utilize this extension and finalize their registration for the exam, commonly known as WAEC GCE, which is designed for individuals not attending regular secondary schools.

The exam offers an opportunity for those seeking to obtain or improve their O’Level results on their own, and according to the council, it will be administered entirely as a Computer-Based Examination (CBE).

The registration fee for the exam remains at N37,000, and the examination itself is slated to occur between September and October 2026, with candidates advised to verify available examination towns at their local WAEC office before completing registration.

It is worth noting that registration for the examination initially began on May 4, 2026, and the latest extension supersedes the previously established deadline of July 31, 2026.
