VIDEO: Protesters demand urgent repairs on Benin-Agbor Bypass

A number of people have taken to the Benin-Agbor Bypass to protest the deplorable condition of the road and call for urgent repairs.

In a video shared by TheBeninBlogger on Thursday, a crowd was seen protesting along the muddy and congested road, as trucks and cars struggled to navigate the route.

In one of the videos, a man was heard calling on the government to fix the road, saying, “APC, we no dey collect money. Make una do our road for us. Tinubu, we no need money, make una do our road for us.”

Some protesters also chanted, “All we are saying, give us good road.”

Another resident described the hardship caused by the condition of the road, saying, “We dey live Agbor Road Bypass. No going, no coming. Everywhere close. We don spend like four hours here.”

The protest comes amid growing concerns over the condition of major roads in the state, with residents and motorists repeatedly calling for government intervention.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government had recently announced plans to rehabilitate the Okhun Road, off Upper Siluko Road, Benin City, after portions of the road failed, causing difficulties for commuters and motorists.

The government said Governor Monday Okpebholo had approved funds for the commencement of rehabilitation work, while the state’s Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, confirmed the development during a visit to the site on Tuesday.

According to Idahosa, the government had commenced the procurement process for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the road, with provision already made for the project in the 2026 budget.

He said the ongoing palliative work was intended to ease the hardship faced by motorists while the government awaited the commencement of comprehensive reconstruction after the rains.

“A few weeks ago, I met with the leadership of the Ovia Federal Constituency. I made them understand that we were going to do palliative work pending when the rain subsides,” Idahosa said.

The Project Engineer of MCC, Atoyebi Tosinwa, said the road had suffered perennial water-percolation problems and that contractors were deploying geotextile technology to address the underlying challenges and improve the durability of the rehabilitation.

However, the latest protest highlights continued frustration among road users over the condition of the Benin-Agbor Bypass and the need for urgent intervention.
