VIDEO: Pastor decries Abuja church demolition

Worshippers of the Temple of Glory Church in the Asokoro area of Abuja were thrown into shock on Monday after officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority demolished their church structures, just a day after members gathered for Sunday service.

Videos circulating on social media captured the demolition exercise as bulldozers and heavy equipment pulled down the church building.

In a live video posted on the church’s Facebook page, a clergyman identified as Pastor Ike decried the enforcement action, accusing the FCDA and the FCT Department of Development Control of disregard for the rule of law while claiming that litigation on the property was currently active.

“This matter is in court, yet Development Control and FCDA have come to demolish the place. The matter is billed for hearing on the 5th of October, but there’s a lawlessness that has overtaken our land.

“See what they have done. They are pulling down our place in Asokoro even though the matter is in court,” he said while filming the scene of the demolition.

In another video shared on Facebook by a church member, Gentle-idyee Ekitok, distraught members were seen conducting emergency evacuations to salvage church equipment and property from the debris.

“We were in Church yesterday only for FCDA to come demolish our Church Temple of Glory Abuja this morning,” he lamented.

The video showed various damaged sections of the worship centre, with some members seen praying in groups amid the commotion; several scrap scavengers were also seen assembled, waiting to carry away metallic parts and structural remnants.

The demolition forms part of ongoing enforcement actions by FCT authorities targeting structures described as illegal or built without proper approvals across the capital.

Similar exercises in recent months have affected residential estates, commercial premises and other buildings, often sparking public outcry from affected owners and residents.

As of the time of this report, the Federal Capital Development Authority and the FCT Administration had yet to issue an official statement specifically addressing the Temple of Glory demolition.
