VIDEO: Mother decries negligence after son sustains injury in Oyo school

A concerned parent has raised an alarm over an incident involving her son at an elementary school in Ibadan, Oyo state, alleging negligence by the school after the pupil sustained injuries that required stitches and medical treatment.

The parent, in a circulating video obtained on Friday, said the child fell within the school premises, resulting in a deep head injury and subsequent complications, including pain in his leg and difficulty walking.

“I’m not the kind of person to come outside to badmouth people, but you see this one… I’m going to talk about it, and this happened to my son in his school,” she said.

She claimed the injury was severe and required medical intervention, including stitches and a scan.

n

“My son fell, his head got cut, the middle of his forehead… it was a very deep cut that they couldn’t even leave it like that. They had to stitch his head… they stitched it twice… like 10 stitches across,” she said.

The parent also alleged that the school failed to properly account for how the incident happened, raising concerns over CCTV footage and staff response at the time of the fall.

She further said efforts to access CCTV footage were unsuccessful, alleging that the school cited technical issues at the time of the incident.

“They said they were changing from NEPA to inverter for a span of seven to eight minutes,” she said, questioning why the moment of the incident was not captured.

She also alleged a lack of communication and follow-up from the school, saying she was blocked from a parents’ group page and that the school did not reach out to check on the child’s condition.

But responding to the allegations, Chairman of the Oyo State Rapid Response Team on Gender-Based Violence, Marcus Williams, said a fact-finding visit to the school showed that the incident was accidental and that the school’s response was appropriate.

Speaking to our correspondent after visiting the school, Williams said, “When we saw the social media posts, we went to that school for fact-finding.”

He added that officials inspected the scene of the incident and were briefed by the school management on what transpired.

n

“What they explained was that an incident occurred that got a child injured. And that after the injury, they responded by taking the child to a nearby hospital,” he said.

According to him, the school also provided initial financial support for treatment and contacted the mother, who later met them at the hospital.

n

“While they were going to the hospital, they called the mother of the child to come and she also met them at the hospital. So, treatment was given to the child. That was what happened,” he said.

The chairman noted that investigators identified a possible cause of the injury during inspection of the scene.

“There was this puncture point on the wall where probably the child fell head… that the child must have hit the head on that led to that cut,” he said.

On the issue of CCTV footage, Williams said the system experienced faults and power interruptions at the time, which may have affected recording, while also recommending backup power solutions for future incidents.

Williams added that the school presented its child protection policy, which staff members had signed, noting that its response aligned with safeguarding procedures.

“Overall, it was an accident. Overall. How they managed it, from what the school told me, was in order,” he said.

He, however, stressed that the situation escalated due to a breakdown in communication between the school leadership and the mother.

n

“However, the interrelationship, the communication gap… as a result of the fact that as the woman was sending the messages, the proprietress was not responding,” he said.

Williams noted that the proprietress was unavailable at the time due to a prayer meeting, adding that the mother’s anxiety also contributed to the tension.

n

“It’s not that she (proprietress) ignored her calls, but the mother was agitated… she was worried, and then she started sending messages, so that woman felt it was too hard to pick,” he said.

He added that better communication could have prevented the escalation of the matter.

“So, if only that communication gap had not happened, we would not be having this conversation right now,” he said.

He further disclosed that he had reached out to the mother and that both the parent and child had been invited for further engagement at the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Department.

The matter, according to him, is still being reviewed through ongoing dialogue between both parties as authorities work toward a resolution.
