Victor Umeh jumps ship from ADC to NDC, blaming prolonged court battles

Sergeant Victor Umeh, the senator representing Anambra Central, has officially switched allegiance from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, citing the prolonged and unresolvable disputes within his former party as the reason for his departure.

This development was made public on the floor of the Senate during a plenary session on Tuesday, when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read out Umeh's letter of resignation and defection.

In his letter, Umeh revealed that he made the decision to leave after holding extensive discussions with his family, constituents, and supporters, and expressed his intention to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Umeh's letter explicitly stated that the "lingering divisions in the leadership and unending litigation" within the African Democratic Congress had made it difficult for him to continue his membership, prompting his decision to defect.

He reiterated his commitment to contributing to the development of the nation, but emphasized that he would now be doing so under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, as he expressed his dedication to the country's progress.

Upon acknowledging Umeh's letter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio offered the lawmaker a brief congratulatory message following the announcement on the Senate floor.

Umeh had previously disclosed his resignation during an interview on Arise TV on Monday, confirming that he had formally left the African Democratic Congress on May 1 and subsequently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

When asked about his decision, Umeh explained that the coalition that formed the ADC had initially brought hope, but was later marred by internal disagreements and legal issues that ultimately led to his departure.

Umeh also addressed the frequent occurrence of party switching in Nigeria, attributing it to the lack of stability within the country's political system, which he believes is the primary cause of such movements.
