Vice Chancellor Olatunji-Bello hails Lagos State University's emergence as a top contender among Africa's most rapidly expanding institutions of higher learning.

Lagos State University's position as Nigeria's most subscribed university for the second year in a row has reaffirmed its reputation as the country's "University of First Choice", underscoring its remarkable growth as one of Africa's fastest-growing institutions.

The university received 84,326 first-choice applications, according to the latest statistics released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board during the ongoing 2026 JAMB Policy Meeting on Admissions held in Abuja on Monday.

In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, LASU noted that this achievement marks the second consecutive year it has emerged as Nigeria's "University of First Choice", a testament to its academic excellence and stability.

The institution surpassed the University of Lagos, which recorded 78,240 applications, and Obafemi Awolowo University with 60,370 applications, to maintain its top position.

LASU attributed its continued dominance in national admission statistics to the growing confidence of Nigerian students and parents in its academic excellence, stability, innovation, and student-focused administration.

The university has undergone significant transformations in recent years, with strategic investments in teaching, research, infrastructure, digital innovation, and global competitiveness, making it one of the most sought-after universities in the country.

Notably, LASU has risen from outside the top 10 most subscribed universities before 2023 to third position in 2023 with over 55,000 applicants, second position in 2024 with 62,601 applications, and first position in 2025 with over 70,000 applications.

The 2026 record of 84,326 applications further solidifies the institution's position as one of the fastest-rising universities in Africa, according to the university's statement.

Vice-Chancellor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its leadership in maintaining the university's prestige.

Olatunji-Bello also commended the university's staff and students for their efforts in strengthening the institution's reputation both nationally and internationally.

The vice-chancellor described the achievement as a strong validation of the administration's vision to establish LASU as a globally competitive institution driven by excellence, innovation, integrity, and impactful scholarship.
