Uzbekistan forward vies with Onuachu for top scorer award in Turkish league

Paul Onuachu's grip on the top spot in the Süper Lig scorers' chart has been loosened, with his lead now narrowed to just two goals, following a trio of matchless performances, as Eldor Shomurodov gains ground.

Onuachu had dominated the chart for a significant portion of the campaign, despite a lengthy absence with Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and had strengthened his position with a streak of eight consecutive league goals upon his return.

A minor injury has since hindered Onuachu's progress, causing him to miss the Week 29 match against Alanyaspor, and he has failed to score against İstanbul Başakşehir, Konyaspor, and Göztepe, allowing Shomurodov to close the gap.

Shomurodov has risen to 20 goals, emerging as Onuachu's nearest rival, after scoring a pair of goals, while Brazilian forward Anderson Talisca has also surged into contention with 19 goals for Fenerbahçe.

Talisca's prospects were bolstered by a decisive hat-trick against Samsunspor at the weekend, propelling him into the mix for the Golden Boot, an award Onuachu hopes to claim, following in the footsteps of compatriot Victor Osimhen, who won it last season.

The momentum has now shifted, with Onuachu seeking to regain his scoring form, while his rivals, including Shomurodov and Talisca, hit peak performance, with the former's consistency and the latter's well-timed run keeping them in the hunt.

Shomurodov's steady stream of goals has kept him within striking distance, while Talisca's decisive contributions, despite limited minutes, have made him a force to be reckoned with in the Golden Boot race.

Meanwhile, Mauro Icardi, with 14 goals, and Osimhen, with 13, trail behind and are unlikely to challenge for the Golden Boot, but could still celebrate a greater prize, as a win for Galatasaray this weekend would secure a 26th league title.

For Onuachu, the focus will be on ending his goal drought when Trabzonspor face Beşiktaş, while Shomurodov's side will host Samsunspor, as the battle for the Golden Boot heats up.
