Instead, Spain will face either Austria or Algeria in the next round, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on Thursday, as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.

Meanwhile, Uruguay's defeat enabled debutants Cape Verde to secure second place in the group, setting up a meeting with defending champions Argentina, led by the inimitable Lionel Messi, following a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia.

Uruguay's exit marked a dismal end to their tournament, with the two-time winners becoming the highest-ranked side to crash out in the group stages, capping off a miserable campaign under Marcelo Bielsa's guidance.

The Uruguay camp had been plagued by reports of internal strife, including clashes between leading players, such as Real Madrid's Federico Valverde, and Bielsa over his tactical decisions, which ultimately contributed to the team's downfall.

Bielsa took responsibility for the defeat, stating, "Journalists and fans of Uruguayan football legitimately want to pin the blame on me, I'm the person responsible and I have to accept it," in the aftermath of the loss.

Spain's King Felipe was in attendance to witness the match, which, despite being a clash between two former World Cup winners, failed to live up to expectations, with Spain's performance being characterized as laboured and unconvincing.

Lamine Yamal's introduction to the starting lineup had sparked Spain's attack into life in their previous 4-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia, but their overall display has left coach Luis de la Fuente with much to ponder ahead of the knockout stages.

Yamal, meanwhile, was replaced 15 minutes from time as Spain continue to manage his minutes following a hamstring injury that ended his club season prematurely, with Ferran Torres, his replacement, missing a gilt-edged chance to double the lead late on.

Uruguay's miserable tournament was encapsulated by Agustin Canobbio's straight red card in stoppage time for a reckless lunge on Pau Cubarsi, as Spain extended their unbeaten run to 34 competitive games without conceding a goal at the World Cup.
