University's infrastructure development surpasses goals, according to Vice Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has hailed the Kaduna State Government's reconstruction of internal roads as a monumental infrastructure boost, the largest the institution has seen in over 40 years.

This development has surpassed the university's expectations and stands as a singular achievement in more than four decades, according to Ahmed.

During a project inspection on Saturday, the vice-chancellor praised Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for extending this support to the federal university without any formal request, a gesture that has been warmly received.

Ahmed expressed his gratitude, stating, "We have waited for 40 years for this, and the quality of the work has exceeded our expectations," underscoring the significant impact of this intervention.

As Nigeria's premier engineering institution, ABU is well-placed to attest to the construction's quality, with the university's engineers actively involved in supervising the project to ensure compliance with stringent engineering standards.

Ahmed noted, "Our engineers are fully involved in the supervision of the work, and we are confident these roads will serve the university community for decades," highlighting the project's enduring benefits.

The vice-chancellor views this intervention as a reflection of the governor's commitment to education and responsible governance, urging other Northern governors to support ABU, which he describes as a shared regional heritage.

Dr Abdullahi Baba Ahmed, the Managing Director of the Kaduna State Roads Agency, revealed that the inspection was part of the agency's assessment of ongoing road projects across the state, which includes approximately 1,345 kilometres of roads across 23 local government areas.

The Kaduna State Government has initiated about 150 road projects, with the reconstruction of ABU's internal roads being a landmark intervention in a federal university, according to Baba Ahmed.

Engineering tests, including coring, in-situ density, and California Bearing Ratio tests, have confirmed the quality of the work, with the Faculty of Engineering of ABU participating in the laboratory tests.

Baba Ahmed expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, stating, "We are satisfied with the quality and pace of work," and expressed optimism that the project would be completed before the end of August or early September despite the rainy season.

The President of the Students' Union Government, Abdulrahman Aliyu, praised the project as one of the biggest infrastructure interventions the university has recently witnessed.

Staff and students alike have welcomed the development, with Deborah Danjuma, a staff member, noting that the reconstruction has restored the institution's image and improved accessibility within the campus.

Yusuf Bala, a Civil Engineering student, acknowledged that the project has addressed a long-standing challenge, despite road maintenance being a Federal Government responsibility.

Chidima Sunday, another student, observed that flooding and poor road conditions had previously made movement around the campus difficult during the rainy season, while Faith Idowu appealed for improved transportation services after the roads are completed.
