University of Ibadan launches hunt for new Vice-Chancellor

The University of Ibadan has initiated the process of finding its 14th Vice Chancellor, following an open call for applications that was made public by the institution's Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu, on Thursday.

This development comes as the post of Vice-Chancellor is set to become vacant on November 1, 2026, as announced in the public notice.

The Governing Council of the university formally kicked off the appointment process during its meeting on March 4, 2026, marking the beginning of the search for the next substantive Vice-Chancellor.

The current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, was appointed in October 2021, after a lengthy and contentious process that followed a five-year non-renewable tenure.

Prior to Adebowale's appointment, the post of Vice-Chancellor had been vacant since December 1, 2020, due to the dissolution of the governing council amidst protests and unrest.

A new Governing Council, led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, was inaugurated in April 2021 to oversee the restart of the appointment process, which ultimately led to Adebowale's selection as Vice-Chancellor on October 14, 2021.

The call for applications outlines specific eligibility criteria, including a maximum age limit of 65 years old as of November 1, 2026, and a minimum of 10 years' experience as a professor.

Additionally, candidates must demonstrate strong academic and administrative leadership skills, as well as a proven track record of integrity and respect within the national and international academic communities.

The ideal candidate is also expected to possess a clear vision for the university's development, excellent physical and mental health, and the ability to attract vital funding to the institution.
