Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk eye Chelsea's stadium as potential venue for European fixtures

The club has been unable to use its Donbas Arena since 2014, when Russia-backed forces seized parts of the city.

Since then, Shakhtar has hosted domestic matches in various Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Lviv, while its European home games have taken place in countries such as Germany, Slovenia, and Poland.

According to reports, negotiations are underway, with Ukrainian sources suggesting that Stamford Bridge is the preferred choice due to its 40,000-capacity and strategic location in west London.

The decision to choose Stamford Bridge is not driven by commercial interests, but rather by the strong relationship that has developed between Shakhtar and Chelsea, particularly since the English club signed Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar in 2023.

The two clubs have also collaborated on the Game4Ukraine charity match, further strengthening their bond, and Shakhtar is now considering Stamford Bridge as a temporary home for its European games.

Other venues, such as Fulham's Craven Cottage and Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium, were also considered, but Stamford Bridge offers a larger capacity, making it an attractive option for hosting high-profile matches against top European clubs.

Shakhtar officials believe that playing at Stamford Bridge could attract significant crowds, especially given the large Ukrainian community in London, with around 32,000 Ukraine-born residents, according to the latest Office for National Statistics figures.

Additionally, there are approximately 100,000 people of Ukrainian heritage living across the UK, providing a potential fan base for Shakhtar's games at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's relatively light schedule, having finished 10th in the Premier League last season and not qualifying for European competition, makes Stamford Bridge an available option, minimizing potential scheduling conflicts.

However, any agreement would still require approval from Hammersmith and Fulham Council and UEFA, highlighting the need for further negotiations and regulatory clearance.
