Uche suffers season-ending knee injury

Getafe have been dealt a significant setback ahead of the 2026/27 La Liga season after Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche was ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a serious knee injury, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

According to a report by Diario AS, the Nigeria international sustained the injury during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against AS Monaco on Thursday, when he was stretchered off following a reckless challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, who was shown a straight red card for the tackle.

Initial assessments suggested Uche, aged twenty-three, had suffered a severe contusion, but further examinations painted a far more worrying picture. An MRI scan confirmed multiple tears to the ligaments and meniscus in his right knee.

The midfielder will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation programme, effectively ending his season before it had even started.

The setback is a huge blow for both player and club. Uche returned to Getafe this summer after completing a loan spell at Crystal Palace and had been hoping to establish himself as a key figure in Jose Bordalas’ squad.

His absence will also be felt by the Super Eagles, with the midfielder now set to miss Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
