Two suspected vandals arrested at A’Ibom accident scene

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested two suspected vandals for allegedly looting items from a truck involved in an accident along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Monday.

She said the suspects were arrested on Sunday while allegedly stealing items from a truck that had fallen into a valley at Afaha community along the highway.

According to the statement, police operatives acted on credible intelligence and arrested one Adamu Hamza, 19, a native of Maiduguri, Borno State, in possession of four suspected stolen truck tyres.

Further investigations led to the arrest of a tricycle operator, Anthony James, who was allegedly used to transport the stolen items from the scene.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded another operational breakthrough following the arrest of suspected vandals involved in the looting and theft of items from an accidented truck along the Calabar–Itu Highway,” the statement read in part.

“On May 10, 2026, at about 10pm, operatives of the command acted swiftly on credible intelligence regarding criminal elements vandalising and stealing from a truck that had fallen into a valley at Afaha along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

“Acting promptly on the information, police operatives mobilised to the scene and successfully arrested one Adamu Hamza, aged 19, in possession of four suspected stolen truck tyres.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of the tricycle operator, Anthony James, who was allegedly used to convey the stolen items from the scene.”

The police spokesperson said the suspects remained in custody while efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing accomplices.

She added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Mohammed Azare, warned criminal elements to desist from looting accident scenes, reiterating the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing.

John urged residents to provide timely and credible information to the police and remain security conscious at all times.
