Two Nigerians arraigned for murder in UK

Two Nigerians identified as Maxwell Oguanaya and a 34-year-old Chibueze Chukwurah have been arrested and charged in connection with the murder of a United Kingdom-based Taiwo Ekerin, in May 2026.

Ekerin lost his life after sustaining a severe head injury following a violent assault outside the Alpha Lounge nightclub on Lewisham High Street in London.

The Metropolitan Police launched a murder investigation under ‘Operation Doughwall’, leading to the arrest and charging of two men, Ogunnaya and Chukwurah, a day later in Glasgow.

According to a statement by the founder of the Nigerians in the UK Community, Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby, the two men have now been remanded in custody and are expected to face trial over the alleged murder.

The statement added that if convicted of murder, Oguanaya and Chukwurah could face life imprisonment under UK law.

He said, “The tragic killing of Taiwo Ekerin in Lewisham in May has deeply affected the Nigerian community in the UK.

“Two Nigerian citizens, Maxwell Oguanaya, 32, and Chibueze Chukwurah, 34, have been arrested and charged in connection with his murder. Both men have been remanded in custody and are due to face trial.

“If convicted of murder, they could face a life sentence. However, it is important to remember that being charged with an offence does not mean someone is guilty. They remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
