Truck rams stationary vehicle in Ogun, kills two

Two persons lost their lives while one other sustained injuries on Monday after a Volvo truck loaded with iron rammed into a stationary vehicle along the Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway in the Ogijo area of Ogun State.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed this in separate traffic updates issued on Monday.

Akinbiyi said the fatal crash occurred at about 7:00 a.m. at Kadesh, inbound Ogijo, along the Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway.

He said, “According to eyewitness accounts, the loaded Volvo truck rammed into a stationary truck ahead of it.

“The three occupants in the Volvo truck were affected in the incident. The motor boy and the escort died on the spot, while the driver sustained injuries.”

He added that the Volvo truck, registered as LND 936 XC, crashed into another truck whose registration number could not be identified because it fled the scene.

Akinbiyi said the affected truck had been towed to the Police Division in Ogijo for further investigation, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at a morgue in Sagamu.

He added, “Traffic was partially affected but, with the intervention of TRACE and the police, the accident was cleared and vehicular movement improved. The road is now free for passage.”

In a separate update, Akinbiyi said two persons were injured after a truck overturned along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at the Car Park C section, outbound Lagos.

According to him, the crash occurred at about 3:03 pm when a truck loaded with plastic exchangers, with registration number KNN 628 ZY, suffered a burst of its two front tyres, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle overturned.

He said, “The crash involved three male adults. Two sustained injuries, while there was no fatality.”

Akinbiyi added that emergency responders from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the police and the Ogun State Emergency Medical Services attended to the injured victims and evacuated them for medical treatment.

He added, “Victims were attended to by OGSEMSAS and evacuated for medical care. TRACE, FRSC and the police managed traffic and the crash scene.

“Offloading of the cargo was carried out, while the vehicle was later uprighted and towed away, restoring traffic flow.”

Akinbiyi noted that the crash temporarily reduced the four-lane carriageway to two lanes, causing heavy traffic before the obstruction was cleared.

“The crash was caused by a tyre burst, leading to loss of control. Rapid response by emergency and traffic agencies minimised casualties and restored order.

n

“The scene has been cleared and traffic has normalised,” he noted.

PUNCH Online reported on June 13 that two women lost their lives in a fatal hit-and-run accident along the Car Park C area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Akinbiyi had stated that the crash occurred at about 6:31 pm when the victims were attempting to cross the highway.
