Truck operator escapes scene following fatal collision that claims life of motorcycle courier in Lagos

A fatal collision occurred along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos when a tanker truck crashed into a dispatch rider, resulting in the rider's death, and the tanker driver is currently at large.

The incident took place near the Cele Bridge corridor, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson.

The HOWO tanker, fully loaded with diesel, struck the dispatch rider, pinning him under the vehicle, and the impact was fatal, causing the rider's death at the scene.

LASTMA spokesperson Taofiq explained that security reports indicated the tanker violently collided with the dispatch motorcycle while in motion, trapping the rider underneath and causing instant death.

LASTMA operatives quickly responded to the incident, using cones and caution tapes to cordon off the area and prevent secondary accidents, ensuring the safety of other road users.

According to Taofiq, this swift action was taken to prevent further collisions and protect commuters on the busy expressway.

The tanker driver fled the scene after the crash, and the vehicle has been handed over to the police for further investigation.

The remains of the deceased were recovered from under the tanker by police operatives and taken to a morgue in Yaba.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and avoidable.

He called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash and ensure the fleeing driver is brought to justice.
