Troops thwart deadly assault on Benue yam marketplace, neutralize two alleged militants

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, in collaboration with operatives of the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, have foiled a terrorist attack, neutralised two suspected terrorists and recovered arms and ammunition during an operation in Benue State.

The military disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu.

According to the statement, the operation followed a distress call received while troops were conducting fighting and confidence-building patrols around Tor Donga Yam Market in the state.

“On arrival, the troops made contact with the terrorists and engaged them decisively. During the encounter, two terrorists, identified as Dantaraba and Golozo, were neutralised,” the statement partly read.

It added that troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, one damaged pistol, one pistol magazine, six rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, nine rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition, one ATM card, one Moniepoint ATM card, and other sundry items.

The military noted that the successful operation ensured the continued safety of traders and residents, allowing commercial activities at Tor Donga Yam Market to continue without disruption or fear of attack.

The statement also revealed that the Force Commander, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Maj. Gen. Moses Gara, commended the troops for what he described as their professionalism, resilience and swift response, saying their actions prevented what could have resulted in significant civilian casualties and disruption of economic activities.

Gara also praised the Benue State Civil Protection Guard for its cooperation with the military in tackling criminality across the state.

He further appreciated members of the public for providing credible and timely information, urging residents to sustain their support for security agencies.

According to him, security remains a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of all stakeholders.
