Tragedy Strikes Ogun Road as Fatal Accident Claims Four Lives

A devastating road crash occurred around 11 p.m. on Monday at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway in Ogun State, claiming the lives of four people.

The collision involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BDJ 482 XC and a blue MAN Diesel truck belonging to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with the crash attributed to speeding.

Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State, revealed the details of the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday, stating that the crash occurred at about 11:16 p.m. on Monday.

According to Odunsi-Oyewole, a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BDJ482XC collided with a blue MAN Diesel truck with registration number RSH969XC, resulting in the deaths of all four occupants of the bus, comprising two male adults and two female adults.

The incident, which occurred at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway, saw no survivors or other injuries recorded, with the victims sustaining fatal injuries and being confirmed dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by speeding, with the truck being towed when the towing chain suddenly snapped, leaving the vehicle stationary on the road.

The speeding Toyota Hiace bus subsequently rammed into the stationary truck, and following the collision, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, leaving the truck behind.

Rescue operatives arrived at the scene within eight minutes of receiving the distress call, and the remains of the victims had been evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Imushin Division had taken custody of the vehicles involved in the crash and commenced further investigation, according to Odunsi-Oyewole.

Akinwunmi Fasakin, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, urged motorists to strictly adhere to speed limits, particularly during night travel, and ensure that towing equipment meets safety standards to prevent avoidable tragedies.

In a separate incident, one person died and three others sustained injury following a road crash at Aiyetoro Junction in the Epe area of Lagos State on March 2.

The accident involved a truck loaded with yams and a commercial tricycle, with the crash occurring when the truck reportedly lost control while attempting to make a U-turn, leading to a collision with the tricycle.
