Tinubu’s reforms yielding results, will shape 2027 election — Minister

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has said President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms are delivering measurable results, expressing confidence that the administration’s performance will remain a major factor in the 2027 presidential election.

Alausa, who spoke in a statement signed and released by his Special Adviser on Media, Ikharo Attah, on Monday, said the administration had implemented difficult but necessary reforms that were beginning to strengthen Nigeria’s economy, improve macroeconomic indicators and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.

He argued that the country’s economic progress was being validated by both domestic and international institutions rather than political narratives.

“Nigeria’s economic progress is no longer a matter of political rhetoric but one supported by credible data and independent assessments,” the minister said.

He added that reports by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, Bloomberg and the National Bureau of Statistics indicated that the country’s economic reforms were producing measurable results and strengthening confidence in the economy.

According to Alausa, key economic indicators are showing positive signs, with inflation gradually easing, economic activities expanding and other macroeconomic indices recording steady improvements.

“The President is focused on building a stronger Nigeria for generations to come. These reforms are not designed for short-term gains but to create lasting prosperity. There is no value in making difficult decisions if they cannot stand the test of time,” he said.

The minister said the administration remained committed to ensuring that the reforms were sustainable and continued to benefit Nigerians beyond the current tenure.

He said the government’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, structural reforms and long-term economic stability was already yielding positive outcomes across several sectors of the economy.

According to him, the reforms are positioning Nigeria on a stronger path towards inclusive economic growth, increased productivity and national development.

Alausa maintained that as Nigerians continue to experience the impact of the reforms, the administration’s record would speak for itself ahead of the next general election.

He also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing policies aimed at strengthening the economy, improving citizens’ welfare and advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The gains of the current reforms will continue to deliver lasting prosperity for all Nigerians,” he said.

President Tinubu’s administration has undertaken a series of major economic reforms since assuming office in May 2023, including the removal of petrol subsidy, the unification of foreign exchange windows, tax and fiscal reforms, and measures aimed at boosting domestic revenue and attracting investment.

While the reforms have been commended by international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank for addressing longstanding structural distortions, they have also triggered significant economic hardship, with soaring inflation, high food prices and rising cost of living prompting widespread concerns among Nigerians.

The Federal Government has consistently defended the policies, arguing that the short-term pains are necessary to restore macroeconomic stability, strengthen public finances and place the economy on a path of sustainable growth. The administration has also introduced a range of social intervention programmes and economic support measures to cushion the impact of the reforms on vulnerable households and businesses.
