Tinubu praises Fasoranti on his centenary, commending his dedication to the nation

President Bola Tinubu has extended his warmest congratulations to Pa Reuben Fasoranti, a renowned Afenifere leader, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, which falls on May 11, hailing him as a paragon of integrity, discipline, and selfless national service.

In a statement personally signed by him on Saturday, Tinubu confessed that his elation at Fasoranti's centenary milestone knows no bounds, asserting that the revered Yoruba leader is deserving of the numerous accolades that will inevitably come his way in recognition of his immense contributions to Nigeria.

Tinubu's statement expressed his unbridled joy, saying "My joy knows no bounds as we witness Pa Reuben Fasoranti attain the milestone age of 100 on May 11," as he went on to eulogize Fasoranti as an embodiment of integrity, honesty, dedicated service, and exemplary leadership.

The President drew attention to Fasoranti's impressive educational background, which spans studies at the University College, Ibadan, now known as the University of Ibadan, as well as the University of Hull in the United Kingdom and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.

Fasoranti's contributions to the education sector were also highlighted by Tinubu, who noted his involvement in teaching and the establishment of schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances' Academy, which was founded in memory of his late wife.

In the realm of politics, Tinubu observed that Fasoranti distinguished himself as a devoted disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and one of the last surviving Awoists, having served in the Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria.

Fasoranti's tenure as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 was also praised by Tinubu, who noted that his integrity and financial prudence played a significant role in managing the state's finances during that period.

Tinubu further commended Fasoranti's pivotal role in the pro-democracy struggles, where he emerged as a powerful voice advocating for the return of democracy to Nigeria during the era of military dictatorship.

As a key figure in Afenifere, Fasoranti is credited by Tinubu with having risen to become the authentic leader of the socio-political group following internal divisions that arose after the passing of Pa Abraham Adesanya.

Tinubu also made reference to the past attempts on Fasoranti's life, including a failed assassination attempt during the Abacha military regime, from which he emerged stronger and more resilient.

Despite having suffered personal losses, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the tragic killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019, Tinubu noted that Fasoranti has persevered and continues to soldier on.

Tinubu expressed his gratitude for Fasoranti's support during his presidential campaign, recalling that the elder statesman had prayed for his victory, which was ultimately granted when he emerged as President, with Tinubu attributing this to God's answer to Fasoranti's prayer.
