Tinubu highlights key accomplishments in healthcare under his government

President Bola Tinubu has underscored the significant strides made by his administration in the healthcare sector, citing ongoing reforms that are broadening access to healthcare, bolstering the workforce, and enhancing health outcomes nationwide.

Tinubu emphasized that every Nigerian, regardless of their location or income, deserves access to quality healthcare, a notion that has guided his administration's efforts since taking office.

Through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the administration has embarked on a sweeping overhaul of the healthcare system, one of the most ambitious in decades, aimed at transforming the sector.

The President outlined the key components of this transformation, which include revitalizing Primary Healthcare Centres, expanding health insurance, immunizing millions of children, strengthening the health workforce, upgrading specialist hospitals, and improving maternal and child health.

Additionally, Nigeria is being positioned to become a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare investment, with the President highlighting the progress made so far, including the addition of six million Nigerians to health insurance and the revitalization of 4,161 Primary Healthcare Centres.

Notably, 3,158 of these centres have already been completed, with 14,283 Primary Healthcare Centres, representing over half of all such centres in Nigeria, now functional.

The vaccination efforts have been particularly successful, with over 102 million children vaccinated against Measles-Rubella and 17.1 million girls protected against cervical cancer through the HPV vaccine.

The President also highlighted the training of 78,054 frontline health workers and the recruitment of 20,000 health professionals into Federal Tertiary Hospitals, as well as the delivery of 503 health infrastructure projects nationwide.

Furthermore, three world-class cancer centres are under development, and the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment has been established, underscoring the administration's commitment to strengthening the healthcare system.

According to the President, these reforms are ultimately aimed at saving lives while building a stronger and more resilient healthcare system for future generations, with the goal of creating a healthier Nigeria at the heart of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Presidency has released a detailed healthcare impact report, which provides data on the improvements recorded under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative since its launch in December 2023.

The report reveals a 17 per cent reduction in maternal mortality in 2025 compared to 2023, as well as a 10 per cent decrease in newborn mortality over the same period, across the 172 MAMII LGAs.

Moreover, over 40,000 women have received free Caesarean Sections reimbursed through the National Health Insurance Authority between 2024 and 2026, and more than 4,000 women have received free Vesico-Vaginal Fistula repairs through Federal Government support.

The report also notes that the revitalization of Primary Healthcare Centres is underway, with 4,161 centres targeted, 3,158 completed, and 1,002 ongoing, while 14,283 PHCs, representing 53 per cent of Nigeria's 27,003 PHCs, are now functional.

In terms of vaccination efforts, the report states that over 102 million children have been vaccinated against Measles-Rubella, 17,146,987 adolescent girls have been protected through HPV vaccination, and more than 174 million polio vaccinations have been delivered.

Additionally, 18.3 million diphtheria vaccinations have been administered, and over 39,000 people have been vaccinated against Mpox across 12 states, making Nigeria the first African country to deploy the vaccine.

The report highlights the training of 78,054 frontline health workers towards a four-year target of 120,000, as well as the recruitment of 20,000 health professionals into Federal Tertiary Hospitals between 2024 and 2026.

Furthermore, 503 health infrastructure projects have been implemented nationwide, 20 Federal Tertiary Hospitals have been upgraded or expanded, and three new world-class cancer centres are under development.

The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment has been established, and 47 companies are already benefiting from the Presidential Executive Order signed to promote medical industrialisation, with ₦26 billion in concessions granted and financing mobilized to support over 90 projects within a $5 billion healthcare investment pipeline.

The reforms are designed to strengthen healthcare delivery, improve health outcomes, and position Nigeria as a major hub for healthcare investment and pharmaceutical manufacturing, according to the report.
