Tinubu hails Nigeria's inclusion in global energy organization

President Bola Tinubu expressed his delight on Friday as Nigeria officially became the newest National Member Committee of the World Energy Council, an achievement he termed a proud moment for the nation, underscoring the country's energy reforms and its leadership role in Africa.

This development, according to Tinubu, is a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria's energy sector, and he conveyed his congratulations through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Welcomes Nigeria into World Energy Council, Congratulates Chairman Abdulrazaq Isa, CEO Bala Wunti and the Inaugural Board,’ highlighted the significance of Nigeria's entry into the global network of over 100 countries, positioning the country to play a more active role in shaping global discourse on energy security, equity, and sustainability.

President Tinubu extended his congratulations to the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, comprising Mr Abdulrazaq Isa, OFR, as Chairman and Mr Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer, as well as other distinguished individuals from various sectors who will serve as inaugural Board members.

Tinubu praised Isa as a distinguished patriot and pioneering industrialist whose investments in refining and industrial energy have opened new frontiers for Nigerian enterprise, and described Wunti as one of Nigeria's finest energy strategists and reform champions with a track record of over three decades of exemplary service.

The President noted that the blend of experienced industry leaders, regulators, finance experts, and youth leaders on the board provides WEC Nigeria with the necessary balance, neutrality, and credibility to succeed in its mission.

According to Tinubu, Nigeria's membership in the World Energy Council is not merely about participation, but about leadership, ensuring that Africa's voice is heard in global energy decisions.

The President affirmed the Federal Government's full support for WEC Nigeria as a neutral platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilization, and innovation, and reiterated Nigeria's commitment to working with WEC London and its global community to deliver secure, affordable, and sustainable energy for all.

Tinubu wished the Chairman, Chief Executive, and the inaugural board every success in their historic national assignment, which aims to make a significant impact on the country's energy sector.

The World Energy Council, established in 1923 and headquartered in London, is a prestigious energy policy body that brings together governments, private sector leaders, academics, and civil society from over 100 countries to shape global dialogue on energy transition, security, and sustainability.

Membership in the World Energy Council through National Member Committees provides countries with a formal seat at major global energy forums, including the World Energy Congress, and has been used by member states to attract investment, benchmark policy against international standards, and strengthen their voice in shaping global energy governance frameworks.
