Tinubu congratulates ex-IG Musiliu Smith at 80

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated a former Inspector-General of Police, Musiliu Smith, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, describing him as a distinguished officer whose career was marked by integrity, professionalism and dedication to national service.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president joined family members, friends and associates in celebrating the retired police chief, commending his long years of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

Smith began his policing career in 1972 as an Assistant Superintendent in Enugu. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving in various capacities including Instructor at the Police College, Ikeja, and Divisional Police Officer in Mubi, Adamawa State.

He later occupied several strategic positions within the force before attaining the peak of his career when he was appointed Inspector-General of Police on May 29, 1999.

Tinubu, in the tribute, praised Smith’s character and professional conduct, noting that his tenure in the police force was defined by discipline and commitment to duty.“Alhaji Smith’s service in the various capacities he found himself was hallmarked by honesty, integrity and strict professionalism,” the President said.

Tinubu also recalled that Smith’s reputation earned him national recognition, including his appointment into the Provisional Ruling Council in 1998 following his postgraduate studies in Strategic Studies at the University of Ibadan.

“He was a thorough-bred cop who brought respectability, discipline and dignity to the Nigerian Police Force,” the President added.

After retiring from active service in 2002, Smith remained engaged in public service. In 2018, he was recalled by former President Muhammadu Buhari to serve as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, a role he held until his resignation in 2022.

The president further commended Smith’s continued contributions to the development of Lagos State and his commitment to religious and community service in retirement.

Tinubu prayed for continued good health and long life for the former police chief, wishing him many more years of meaningful service to Nigeria.
