Three killed, scores displaced in Kebbi communal clash

At least three persons have been killed and several others displaced following a violent clash between Hausa and Fulani residents in Alwasa community, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The crisis, which began as a minor disagreement between youths over reckless motorcycle riding, quickly spiralled into deadly violence, exposing deep-seated tensions in the community.

Eyewitnesses said the situation escalated after a Fulani youth allegedly stabbed a Hausa counterpart, sparking outrage and setting off a chain of reprisals.

Chairman of Argungu Local Government, Sani Gulma, who spoke during an on-the-spot assessment visit by Governor Nasir Idris, said the violence intensified after the suspect fled the scene.

“After the suspect ran away, some Hausa youths launched a reprisal on a Fulani settlement, leading to the death of two persons and the displacement of many.

“Most of those killed were innocent and not directly involved in the conflict, yet they paid the ultimate price,” he said.

The governor condemned the killings and issued a stern warning against further violence, vowing that those responsible would be brought to justice.

“I have directed security agencies to track down the individual who initiated this crisis. I assure you that justice will be served,” the governor said.

He stressed that the incident must not be allowed to fracture the long-standing relationship between the communities.

“Alwasa has enjoyed over 100 years of peaceful coexistence between Hausa and Fulani. We will not allow a few individuals to disrupt this harmony,” Idris stated.

In a move to cushion the impact of the tragedy, the governor announced a donation of N2m each to the families of the victims.

Security agencies have since been deployed to the area to restore calm, while residents remain on edge amid fears of further reprisals.
