Three abductors of Ogun poly students killed in gun battle

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that three suspected kidnappers who abducted five students of the Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapaade, Ogun State were neutralised in a gun duel with security operatives.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, confirmed this in a statement highlighting the police operational success across the country on Sunday.

Iniedu noted that following the rescue of the victims, the police anti-kidnapping unit and operatives of the Department of State Security trailed the kidnappers to their hideout.

He noted that the security team engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel during which three suspects were neutralised while others escaped with gunshot injuries.

He stated, “Six Gateway ICT Polytechnic students who were kidnapped at Ipara were released unhurt following intensive security pressure.

“Anti-Kidnapping and DSS operatives subsequently stormed the kidnappers’ hideout and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel. Three kidnappers were neutralised, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.”

The FPRO noted that one AK-47 rifle, one empty magazine, three mobile phones, and the sum of N2.3 million were recovered during the operation.

He noted that the State Criminal Investigation Department had commenced further investigation into the incident.

PUNCH Metro reported on Thursday that the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, had declared that kidnappers and other criminal elements would have no hiding place in the state following the rescue of the five students and two other residents.

The governor, who addressed journalists at his Oke-Mosan office, Abeokuta, alongside security chiefs and some of the rescued students, said the successful operation underscored his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

Abiodun had said that the students were rescued during a coordinated operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Ogun State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps), local vigilantes, and hunters.

The governor had also disclosed that the operation received a major boost after the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the deployment of a police helicopter for aerial surveillance, which he said played a crucial role in the rescue.
