TCN declares force majeure on Birnin Kebbi–Niamey power line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has declared Force Majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey Transmission Line following the collapse of three transmission towers.

The company said the incident occurred on 26 August 2026 at 17:38hrs, when the transmission line tripped. A trial reclosure was subsequently carried out at 18:03hrs, but the line tripped again immediately.

According to TCN on its X handle on Friday, a fault-finding patrol conducted by its linesmen after the incident discovered that towers T109, T110 and T111 had collapsed at Chibike Village.

TCN attributed the collapse to heavy rainfall and strong winds experienced in the area.

“The collapse of the three transmission towers has affected bulk power transmission to Niamey through the line,” the company said.

The transmission company said it had mobilised personnel and resources to the affected site to commence rehabilitation work.

“TCN has mobilised personnel and resources to the site and will ensure that all hands are on deck to facilitate the speedy rehabilitation of the collapsed towers and return the line to service in the shortest possible time,” it said.

The company expressed regret over the disruption, particularly to electricity customers in Niamey, and assured them that efforts were underway to restore normal supply.

“We regret the inconvenience this may cause to our customers in Niamey and assure that every effort is being made to restore normal supply promptly,” TCN said.
