TCN blames Eko Disco feeders for Lekki transmission fault

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has blamed faults on the Eko Electricity Distribution Company’s feeders for the recent transmission fault at the Lekki Transmission Substation.

TCN, in a statement issued by its management on Thursday, said the clarification became necessary following what it described as misinformation circulated by EKEDP on the incident.

According to the company, EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders simultaneously tripped at about 4:34 a.m. on August 26 due to overcurrent and earth fault.

The fault, TCN said, resulted in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of its TR1 60MVA 132/33kV transformer, accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke.

“Contrary to EKEDP’s claim that TCN’s T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the actual incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at 04:34am on 26th August, 2026, due to overcurrent and earth fault,” TCN said.

The company said its maintenance crew responded promptly, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both the primary and secondary breakers later the same day.

However, TCN said the fault occurred again when EKEDP attempted to close its Oniru feeder on trial.

“Upon EKEDP’s trial closure of its Oniru feeder, the same relay indications caused another trip, necessitating further corrective work,” it said.

TCN stressed that there was no outage on its T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDP.

“No outage occurred on TCN’s T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDP,” the company said.

It added that “the incident was strictly related to EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders.”

TCN said its technical team had remained on-site and was working to restore electricity supply to affected customers as quickly as possible.

“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.

EKEDP had earlier stated that the unit was out of service following an unexpected system trip, which interrupted power supply along the Oniru 33kV feeder line, saying that power had been rerouted and backed up where possible.
nThe company assured affected electricity customers that efforts were ongoing to resolve the fault and apologised for the inconvenience caused.

“TCN assures electricity customers impacted by the incident that we are actively addressing the fault caused by the DisCo’s feeders and regrets any inconvenience caused,” it said.

The transmission company also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the national transmission network.

“We are committed to working assiduously to put in place a more robust transmission network,” TCN said.
