Tambuwal, Dasuki meet defence minister, seek more security resources for Sokoto

A former Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal, has met with the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), over the worsening security situation in parts of the state.

Tambuwal, who was accompanied by the member representing the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency and Deputy Minority Leader, House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, particularly raised concerns over insecurity in Kebbe Local Government Area and Kaya community in Tambuwal LGA.

The meeting, according to Tambuwal, was aimed at seeking stronger federal intervention and additional security resources to protect communities affected by persistent attacks and restore residents’ confidence.

In a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, the former governor said the delegation used the meeting to convey the concerns of residents directly to the minister.

“We conveyed the concerns of our people and stressed the urgent need for increased security presence, additional operational resources and sustained action to protect lives and property, and enable our people to pursue their livelihoods without fear,” Tambuwal wrote.

He said the delegation also emphasised the need for security agencies to sustain and intensify operations in affected communities, noting that residents must be able to return to their farms, businesses and other daily activities without fear of attacks.

According to him, the minister assured the delegation of the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling the security challenges, and pledged additional resources and operational support to reinforce ongoing security operations in the affected areas.

Tambuwal welcomed the assurances but stressed that the commitments must be urgently translated into concrete action.

“We appreciate these assurances and look forward to their swift translation into action on the ground,” he said.

The meeting comes amid renewed security concerns in parts of Sokoto, particularly communities in the southern axis of the state that have faced attacks, killings, displacement and disruption of economic activities by armed groups.

Kebbe LGA has recently come under heightened security attention following attacks by suspected Lakurawa militants. Several communities have reportedly been affected, with residents fleeing their homes and farmlands amid concerns over their safety.

In one of the recent incidents, residents of Ungushi community in Kebbe LGA were reportedly attacked, with scores of people killed. The development triggered fresh concerns over the safety of rural communities and renewed calls for stronger military and other security deployments in the area.n

Tambuwal stressed that he would continue to engage relevant authorities until lasting peace was restored to affected communities.

“The security and wellbeing of our people remain paramount. We will continue to engage all relevant authorities and pursue every necessary intervention until lasting peace and security are restored to our communities,” he added.
