Sokoto villagers protest attacks, abductions

Residents of at least 10 villages in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Friday blocked roads and burnt tyres to protest what they described as persistent attacks and abductions in their communities.

The protesters, who called for urgent government and security intervention, said residents in Tambuwal and neighbouring Kebbe Local Government Area were increasingly living in fear.

A resident who participated in the protest told our correspondent that the demonstration was organised to draw the attention of the government and security agencies to the worsening insecurity in the area.

He said, “The protest is to call the attention of the security agencies and the government to what we are passing through in Tambuwal and Kebbe local government areas.

“People are being attacked and communities are no longer feeling safe. We want the government to take urgent action and deploy more security personnel to protect our villages.”

The protester said residents from no fewer than 10 villages participated in the demonstration, adding that the burning of tyres was intended to draw the attention of authorities to the seriousness of the situation.

“We have people from more than 10 villages participating in the protest. We are tired of living in fear. We want the authorities to come to our aid before the situation gets worse,” he said.

The protest disrupted movement along the affected roads as residents expressed concerns over persistent attacks and abductions allegedly affecting communities in Tambuwal and Kebbe local government areas.

The development came amid growing concerns over attacks and abductions in parts of Sokoto State, particularly communities in the eastern and southern axis of the state.

Residents have repeatedly called for increased security presence, improved response to distress calls and sustained operations against armed groups operating in rural communities.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Sokoto State Government or the police command on the protest.
