Sokoto gives go-ahead for building projects, including places of worship

The Sokoto State Executive Council gave the green light to a slew of projects on Thursday, covering a wide range of sectors including education, healthcare, transport, security, and religious affairs, all aimed at bolstering service delivery across the state.

These approvals were made during the council's inaugural meeting of 2026, marking a significant step forward in the state's development trajectory.

A substantial sum of ₦336.6 million was allocated for the renovation of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence and staff quarters at Sokoto City University, a move intended to enhance the working and living conditions of academic staff and fortify the university system, according to Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Isa Mahishanu.

Professor Mahishanu further revealed that ₦179.3 million was earmarked for upgrading the clinic at the State College of Basic and Remedial Studies to a primary healthcare centre, a development that aligns with NBTE requirements and is poised to improve access to quality healthcare services.

A significant outlay of over ₦956 million was also approved for the renovation of Government Secondary School Trike and the establishment of an out-of-school children’s centre, with Mahishanu explaining that these initiatives are designed to bridge infrastructure gaps and expand access to education, particularly for out-of-school children.

In the transport sector, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Sambo Bello Danchadi, announced that ₦78.34 million was approved for the rehabilitation of Sokoto State Transport Authority facilities, a move that will ensure the sustainability and efficiency of the state's mass transit system.

Danchadi also disclosed that ₦221.9 million was allocated to complete the long-abandoned Wamakko General Hospital project, which, upon completion, will substantially expand access to healthcare across the state.

A sum of ₦144.6 million was approved for the construction of a central Jumaat mosque in Shuni, as well as the completion of a mosque at the NSCDC headquarters, with Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Professor Jabir Maihula, stating that these projects are intended to support religious activities and foster unity and moral development within communities.

Regarding security and agriculture, Commissioner for Innovation and Digital Economy, Bashir Umaru Kwabo, revealed that the council approved the construction of security outposts and a mechanical workshop worth ₦141.97 million in Gwadabawa, which will help safeguard lives and property, while also supporting farmers and boosting agricultural productivity.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to the timely execution of all approved projects, assuring that they would be completed within the stipulated timelines and without cost variation.
