Sokoto allocates N1.76 billion to purchase 1,000 motorbikes for enhanced law enforcement

The Sokoto State Government has given the green light for a N1.759bn expenditure on 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles, which will be distributed to security agencies to bolster their efforts against banditry and enhance security operations statewide.

This approval was a key outcome of the sixth regular meeting of the Sokoto State Executive Council for 2026, presided over by Deputy Governor Idris Muhammad Gobir.

A statement released by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at Government House, on Thursday, revealed that these motorcycles will supplement the 62 armoured vehicles the state government recently acquired at a cost of N27bn, which have been handed over to security agencies.

The primary purpose of the motorcycles is to improve the mobility of security personnel, particularly in areas with challenging terrain and communities affected by banditry.

According to Bawa, the procurement of the motorcycles is part of the state government's broader strategy to equip security agencies with the necessary resources to effectively combat crime.

The council emphasized the importance of enhancing security operations, with the procurement of 1,000 motorcycles aimed at complementing the recently acquired armoured vehicles and boosting the operational capacity of security agencies across the state, as quoted by Bawa.

The council also sanctioned a N723.17m allocation for the renovation of Government Technical College, Runjin Sambo.

Other education-related projects that received approval include a N498.99m allocation for the rehabilitation of A.A. Raji Special School, N489.32m for the renovation of Phase I of the College of Nursing Sciences, and N229.36m for the renovation of male and female hostels at the College of Basic and Remedial Studies.

An additional N174.64m was approved for the renovation of staff quarters and the upgrading of the perimeter fence at the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Wurno.

Regarding healthcare infrastructure, N133.67m was allocated for the construction of a perimeter fence at Wamakko Primary Health Centre.

The council further approved N93.88m for the procurement of vocational learning equipment for 46 women’s vocational centres across the 23 local government areas.

A sum of N90.21m was also approved for the purchase of PVC pipes and plumbing fittings to maintain 142 semi-urban water supply schemes statewide.

These approvals, according to Bawa, demonstrate the government's commitment to enhancing security while investing in critical infrastructure and human development.

Bawa noted that the sixth regular executive council meeting, which lasted approximately two hours, reviewed key issues related to the state's security and socio-economic development.
