Senator Buba secures PRP nomination for governor

The Peoples Redemption Party has formally confirmed Shehu Buba, the senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, as its candidate for the governorship election in Bauchi State in 2027.

This confirmation was made public on Monday in Bauchi by Haruna Buhari, the party's Deputy National Vice Chairman for the North and overseer of the Bauchi State primary election, following the conclusion of the party's governorship primary.

The primary election was part of the PRP's nationwide primary elections, which were conducted across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in line with the party's guidelines and electoral laws.

According to Haruna Buhari, Shehu Buba emerged as the sole cleared aspirant for the governorship ticket, fulfilling all necessary constitutional and legal requirements for his confirmation.

Buhari explained that the party's constitution allows for affirmation even when there is only one aspirant, and that the delegates must agree and return the elected candidate, a process that has been completed.

A total of 766 delegates from the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State participated in the process and endorsed Buba as the party's candidate.

Upon accepting the nomination, Buba pledged to implement a minimum wage of N80,000 for public servants if he is elected governor, stating "I repeat, we will implement a minimum wage of N80,000 in the public service".

The senator described the PRP as a movement rooted in justice, equity, and the dignity of ordinary Nigerians, representing a continuation of the late Mallam Aminu Kano's political ideals.

Buba called for unity within the party, extending an olive branch to supporters of other aspirants, saying "To those who supported other aspirants, I extend my hand to you, from this moment forward, we move together".

He identified security, economic development, infrastructure, agriculture, and mining as key priorities in his policy agenda, promising to integrate traditional institutions, local security structures, and technology-driven surveillance into a coordinated response framework to address insecurity.

Buba noted that "no investor will come where there is insecurity, and no farmer will plant where there is fear", and promised investments in roads, storage facilities, renewable energy, and industrial infrastructure.

The confirmation came on the same day that Buba officially defected from the All Progressives Congress to the PRP, citing a lack of internal democracy, unfair treatment, and marginalisation within the ruling party.

Earlier in the day, Buba's Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Comrade Sabo Mohammed, issued a statement in which the senator explained that his decision to leave the APC was due to the absence of internal democracy, lack of fairness, marginalisation of genuine party members, and disregard for grassroots supporters' voices.

Buba stated that his decision to join the PRP was informed by the party's commitment to justice, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership.

Prior to his defection, the senator had withdrawn from the APC governorship contest, alleging irregularities and constitutional breaches during the party's primaries in Bauchi State, and accusing some party officials of announcing predetermined results without conducting actual voting.
