RMAFC submits political, public officers salary recommendations to Tinubu

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission has said it has concluded the review of the remuneration package for political and public office holders and submitted its recommendations to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.

The commission disclosed this in a statement by its Head of Information and Public Relations Unit, Maryam Yusuf, on Wednesday, following a courtesy visit by members of the Council of Retired Permanent Secretaries to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

According to the statement, the Chairman of the RMAFC, Dr Mohammed Shehu, said the commission remained committed to ensuring that requests for the review of the remuneration of political and public office holders received fair consideration.

Shehu made the remarks while receiving the delegation led by the National Vice Chairman of the Council of Retired Permanent Secretaries, Elder Akin Arikawe.

The RMAFC chairman described retired permanent secretaries as one of the pillars of Nigeria’s public service, commending their contributions to policy formulation and national development.

He said, “Nothing can replace the experience of an experienced public servant. You are still relevant in shaping policy and advising government on intricate national issues.”

Shehu also disclosed that the commission had completed the review process and had already transmitted its recommendations to the President.

According to him, “The Commission had already concluded its review of which substantial parts of the issues canvassed by the retired Permanent Secretaries have been captured and forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.”

He assured the delegation that the commission had considered their requests within its constitutional mandate.

“We have carefully considered your case within our constitutional mandate and submitted our recommendations. We remain fully supportive of initiatives that will ensure retired Permanent Secretaries live dignified lives after years of meritorious service,” he said.

Earlier, Arikawe said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the commission and appreciating its efforts in addressing issues affecting retired permanent secretaries.

He explained that the council, guided by its motto, “Continuous Improvement,” was established to harness the experience of retired permanent secretaries in supporting government through policy advice, institutional memory and constructive engagement on national issues.

According to him, the council remains committed to contributing to reforms that would strengthen governance and public administration in the country.

Also speaking, Federal Commissioners representing Kwara and Kebbi states, Ismail Agaka and Rakiya Haruna, respectively, described members of the council as distinguished administrators whose experience had helped shape Nigeria’s economic and governance policies.

They urged the retired permanent secretaries to continue mentoring younger public servants and supporting ongoing reforms.

The statement further quoted the Director of the Allocation Department and the Overseeing Director of the Fiscal Efficiency Department, Dr U.K. Umar, as saying that the commission had commenced work on the issues raised by the council.

He said consultations were ongoing to review the existing legal framework and address the council’s requests in line with the commission’s recommendations and extant laws.

The statement added that both parties reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s public service, preserve institutional memory, and promote good governance.

The PUNCH recently reported that a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George, took a swipe at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission over its plan to review the salaries of President Bola Tinubu, his cabinet members, and other categories of elected political office holders.
