Remi Tinubu clarifies remarks, notes federal government also provides assistance to vendors selling tomatoes and peppers

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, has clarified her previous statements regarding small-scale businesses, emphasizing that the Federal Government's empowerment initiatives encompass a broader range of traders, including those selling tomatoes, pepper, vegetables, and roasted plantain, in addition to akara sellers.

She made these remarks on Monday during the inauguration of the newly constructed Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir of Hadejia’s Palace in Jigawa State, as seen in a video broadcast by TVC News.

Her comments come in response to the backlash she faced on social media after her earlier statements about akara, roasted corn, and kuli-kuli businesses sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians accusing her of downplaying the country's economic struggles.

The First Lady directly addressed the criticism, revealing that the Federal Government had donated N100m to the Jigawa State Government to empower 2,000 petty traders in the state, with each beneficiary set to receive N50,000 to recapitalize their businesses.

According to Senator Tinubu, the empowerment programs will not be limited to akara sellers, but will also support traders of other essential goods, such as tomatoes, boole, pepper, and vegetables, to ensure the sustainability of their businesses.

The First Lady stated that the government will continue to provide support to these traders, despite the criticism, and expressed confidence that the beneficiaries appreciate the government's efforts, adding that the government remains committed to caring for its people.

Senator Tinubu also highlighted Nigeria's untapped resources, citing her visit to an orange orchard in Benue State, and expressed hope that young Nigerians will explore opportunities beyond the oil industry, recognizing the country's vast potential.
