Relatives of Aguiyi-Ironsi seek restitution and acknowledgment nearly six decades following overthrow

The family of Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria's first military Head of State, is seeking an apology from the Federal Government for his death in 1966, as well as compensation and reconciliation.

Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi, the head of the family, made this demand during an interview with Arise News on Thursday, emphasizing the need for a sincere apology and reconciliation.

According to Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi, his uncle was a visionary leader who was wrongly punished for a coup in which he had no involvement, describing him as a detribalized Nigerian and a good leader.

Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi's tenure as Head of State was brief, lasting only six months, and ended in violence, with Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi noting that he was taken from them not for any sin he committed, but because he was the most senior military officer at the time.

Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi pointed out that his uncle's death was a result of his position, rather than any wrongdoing on his part, stating that he was told to take charge due to his seniority, which ultimately cost him his life.

He expressed hope that his appeal would reach those in positions of power who could take action, saying he hopes that people who can make this happen are listening to his plea.

Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi served as Nigeria's Head of State from January 16 to July 29, 1966, taking charge after the January 15, 1966 coup that claimed the lives of the country's political leadership.

Although he survived the initial coup and helped crush the mutiny, his later decision to centralize power under Decree 34, along with his failure to prosecute the plotters, fueled resentment among northern officers.

Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi was killed on July 29, 1966, alongside his host, Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, in a mutiny by northern soldiers known as the July counter-coup.
