Rampage in Ogun as crowd sets fire to alleged bike thief, killing him

A gruesome incident unfolded in Magbon Village, located in the Powerline area of Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, where an unidentified man was brutally beaten and set on fire over allegations of stealing a motorcycle.

The violent attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, when a group of approximately five men chased the victim on a motorcycle before knocking him down near a bush, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to PUNCH Metro.

An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the incident, revealed that the attackers used sticks to beat the man, inflicting a deep cut on his forehead as they descended upon him.

As the assault continued, some of the assailants poured petrol on the victim, who had already slumped, and set him ablaze, the source added, providing a disturbing account of the events that transpired.

The eyewitness explained that the victim was chased from Ola Imam Bus Stop along Igbo-Olomu Road, with the attackers accusing him of stealing a motorcycle, and that three suspects are currently being held at the Ogijo Police Division.

The source further stated that the victim was still breathing when the police arrived, and was rushed to a hospital, but unfortunately died shortly after, while some of those responsible for setting him on fire are still at large.

A resident, identified as Adeoye, told the correspondent that the timely intervention of bystanders prevented the victim from dying at the scene of the incident.

Adeoye also mentioned that the Divisional Police Officer of Ogijo personally visited the scene, and that some residents who witnessed the incident accompanied the police to the station, but their statements were not taken, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

Another resident, Rasaq, revealed that community members pursued and apprehended three of the suspects, who were subsequently handed over to the police, and that both the victim and the suspects are believed to be from the northern part of the country.

Rasaq stated that the suspects had poured petrol on the victim, but the fire was extinguished before it could completely consume him, thanks to the intervention of people at the scene, and that the victim later died in the hospital.

According to Rasaq, officers from the Ogijo Police Division evacuated the victim and took the arrested suspects into custody, marking a significant development in the case.

When contacted on Monday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident, stating that three suspects had been arrested, and that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Babaseyi provided additional details, stating that the police responded swiftly to a mob attack in Elepete, Ogijo, on Friday, March 20, 2026, where a severely injured victim was rescued but later died in the hospital.
