Raheem Sterling to appear in court over dangerous driving charges

Former England winger Raheem Sterling will appear in court next month after being charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen.

The 31-year-old is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on September 15, 2026, following a single-vehicle collision on the M3 in Hampshire in May.

As reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, Sterling crashed his Lamborghini on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on May 28. Police said no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.

“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged with the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.”

The force added: “The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on 28 May, 2026.

“No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.”

Sterling was arrested following the incident and subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries.

The charges come after police initially investigated the possibility that Sterling had been driving while unfit through drugs. However, that allegation is not among the offences now brought against him.

Sterling, who is currently without a club, most recently played for Dutch side Feyenoord after leaving Chelsea.

He joined Feyenoord on a short-term deal earlier this year following his departure from Chelsea, where he had fallen out of favour and was subsequently allowed to train away from the first team.

Before his difficult spell at Stamford Bridge, Sterling enjoyed a highly successful career at Manchester City.

He joined City from Liverpool in 2015 and went on to win four Premier League titles, five League Cups and an FA Cup during his seven-year spell at the club.

Sterling moved to Chelsea in 2022 before spending the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal. He later returned to Chelsea before moving to Feyenoord.

The forward also enjoyed a distinguished international career with England, earning **82 caps** between 2012 and 2022 and representing the Three Lions at three World Cups and two European Championships.

Sterling’s court appearance will now mark the next stage of the legal proceedings arising from the May motorway collision.
