Prioritize economic growth over partisan conflicts, ADC leader advises Tinubu

Dr Chike Okogwu, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress, is urging President Bola Tinubu to shift his focus towards tackling Nigeria's economic and social woes, rather than getting entangled in political skirmishes, as the nation grapples with myriad challenges.

The ADC National Leader of Persons with Disabilities made this plea in a statement on Saturday, emphasizing that the Federal Government should give precedence to policies aimed at directly enhancing the living standards of Nigerians, in light of the President's recent remarks on political rivalry.

Okogwu underscored that soaring inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and the escalating cost of living are the most pressing concerns facing citizens, and thus warrant the administration's undivided attention, as these issues have a direct bearing on the daily lives of Nigerians.

He stressed that President Tinubu should concentrate on mitigating the effects of inflation, hunger, insecurity, and unemployment, rather than expending energy on political battles, as these are the tangible challenges that Nigerians are grappling with on a daily basis.

The ADC chieftain also highlighted the plight of Persons with Disabilities, who continue to encounter barriers in accessing healthcare, education, transportation, employment, and other essential public services, despite the existence of laws that safeguard their rights.

Okogwu called upon the Federal Government and state governments to ensure the full implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, and to adopt policies that foster inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, as a matter of constitutional right and development priority.

He emphasized that disability inclusion should not be viewed as an act of charity, but rather as a fundamental right that is enshrined in the constitution, and that no Nigerian should be left behind in the pursuit of equal opportunities and access to essential services.

The ADC, according to Okogwu, remains committed to supporting policies that promote accessible infrastructure, quality education, improved healthcare, employment opportunities, and increased participation of Persons with Disabilities in governance, as these are essential for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

Okogwu noted that the true measure of leadership lies in the positive impact that it has on the lives of citizens, and that history tends to celebrate leaders who have made a tangible difference in the lives of their people, by reducing poverty, strengthening institutions, protecting the vulnerable, and uniting their citizens.

His remarks come at a time when political activities are gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties intensifying their criticism of the Tinubu administration's handling of the economy, while the Presidency continues to defend its reforms as necessary for stabilizing the economy and delivering long-term growth.
