President Tinubu nominates Tegbe for minister of power, awaiting Senate approval

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested that the Senate confirm Joseph Tegbe as the new Minister of Power, a position that became vacant after Adebayo Adelabu's resignation.

This development was made known through a letter presented to the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which outlined the nomination in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.

The letter emphasized the need for swift consideration of Tegbe's nomination, with President Tinubu expressing his hope for an expeditious process and extending his highest regards to the Senate.

Upon reading the letter, Akpabio promptly referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for immediate review and action, setting the stage for Tegbe's potential confirmation.

Tegbe's nomination comes on the heels of Adelabu's resignation in March 2026, as he prepares to contest the Oyo State governorship election in 2027, in line with the requirement for political appointees to step down before seeking elective office.

According to the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tegbe's appointment aims to bolster ongoing reforms in the power sector, focusing on enhancing grid stability and attracting sustainable investments that align with the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Joseph Tegbe, an Oyo State native, brings over three decades of experience in fiscal and economic reforms across both public and private sectors to the table, making him a strong candidate for the position.

His professional background includes serving as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, as well as his current role as Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership.

Tegbe also chaired the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee, which was inaugurated in 2025, and has been instrumental in regulatory and institutional reforms within the power sector, including collaborations with key entities such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company.
