Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has backed new manager Enzo Maresca, describing the Italian as the “perfect” person to lead the Premier League champions following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Maresca was appointed as Guardiola’s successor after the Spaniard brought an end to his successful 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium. The 46-year-old officially took charge of the club during City’s pre-season tour, overseeing his first match in a penalty shootout defeat to Inter Milan in Hong Kong.

According to BBC Sport on Sunday, speaking about the club’s new manager, Gvardiol expressed confidence in Maresca’s ability to build on City’s success despite the challenge of replacing one of football’s most decorated coaches.

“The level is that high, and he has been chosen with reason as the manager,” Gvardiol said.

“I think he has quality, has some new ideas, and also we need to see what we are going to do with the style of play, the football we are going to play and the tactics.

“I think he is a perfect one, but of course, it takes time. It’s something totally new. It’s not easy to change the manager, so we will take time.”

The Croatia international added that the players have a key role to play in helping Maresca settle into his new position.

“It’s our job to help him as much as possible and also to listen and try to adapt as quick as possible,” he said.

Gvardiol also revealed that he has already held talks with Maresca, with their discussion focusing on his recovery from injury and his role under former manager Guardiola.

Reflecting on Guardiola’s exit, the defender said the timing of the announcement was appropriate, adding that the squad had sensed the legendary coach’s time at the club was coming to an end after a decade in charge.

Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season after guiding Manchester City to numerous domestic and international trophies, ushering in a new chapter under Maresca.
