Politician launches bid for Ogun state governor in fourth consecutive try

Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, a member of the House of Representatives representing Imeko-Afon/Yewa North Federal Constituency, has announced his intention to run in the Ogun State governorship election in 2027, marking his fourth attempt at the state's top job.

Isiaka, who chairs the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, made this declaration on Sunday in Abeokuta during an interview with journalists, expressing confidence in his experience and understanding of Ogun State's political and economic landscape.

He believes his experience and qualifications make him an ideal candidate for the position, driven by a desire to build a more economically viable state through industrialisation, improved healthcare and education, and job creation.

Isiaka dismissed claims that his governorship ambition is being sponsored by Governor Dapo Abiodun, insisting that his decision to run is personal and based on his own ambitions.

He stated, "I should let you know that I am running for the governorship of the state for 2027, though a formal declaration will be made very soon, but it is good to let you, the media, as major stakeholders in our democratic process, know that I am interested in this race."

Isiaka has begun consultations with party stakeholders in line with the requirements of the All Progressives Congress, having met with them over the past three weeks to inform them of his intention to run in the 2027 governorship race.

He emphasized that his background and experience put him in a strong position to lead the state, citing his strong academic background and extensive experience in Ogun State politics.

Isiaka noted that he is a bona fide indigene of the state with no controversy surrounding his eligibility, and that he has all the necessary qualifications to contest the governorship.

He added that his administration, if elected, would build on the achievements of the current government, with the goal of creating an economically viable state.

Isiaka expressed his intention to build on the "fantastic achievements" of the present administration of Gov Abiodun, including the development of a seaport, oil producing status, and improved infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

He called for a level playing field in the selection of the party's governorship candidate, urging adherence to fairness, equity, and transparency in the process.

Isiaka also cautioned traditional rulers against endorsing aspirants ahead of the party's primary, urging them to allow due process to unfold.

Isiaka has previously contested the governorship election in 2011 under the Peoples Party of Nigeria, in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, and in 2019 under the African Democratic Congress, but was unsuccessful in all his previous attempts.

He later defected to the APC and won the Imeko-Afon/Yewa North Federal Constituency seat in the 2023 general election, bringing him to his current position as a member of the House of Representatives.
