Police, military recover 67 stolen cows in Kano

The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Military Joint Task Force deployed along the Kano-Katsina border, has recovered 67 cows and other livestock allegedly rustled by suspected criminals in Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

The command said the operation followed credible intelligence received on Wednesday, noting that suspected cattle rustlers had attacked several villages around Gwarzo and neighbouring communities.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

According to the statement, operatives from the Gwarzo Police Division and personnel of the Military JTF were immediately mobilised to the affected communities after receiving the intelligence report.

The police said the suspects engaged the security operatives in a gun duel upon sighting them but were eventually overpowered by the joint security team.

“Due to the superior firepower and tactical superiority of the joint team, the criminals were forced to abandon the rustled livestock and flee outside the state,” the statement said.

The police disclosed that a total of 67 cows, one donkey and one sheep were recovered during the operation.

It added that the recovered livestock were taken into custody at the Gwarzo Police Division before being released to their rightful owners after proper identification and verification.

“The recovered livestock were formally handed over to their rightful owners on May 7 through the respective district heads under the supervision of the Local Government Chairman,” the statement added.

The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, noting that intelligence-led operations and surveillance had been intensified in the affected communities to prevent further attacks.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the operatives and the military personnel for what he described as gallantry and professionalism during the operation.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities threatening the peace and livelihood of residents, particularly in rural communities.

Bakori also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and proactive policing across the state.

On May 1, the Ogun State Police Command arrested two suspected cattle rustlers and recovered a cow valued at N1.7m during a swift response operation in the Ifo/Ibogun area of the state.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 30, 2026, at about 2:30 a.m., when suspected rustlers invaded a dairy farm at Omitoro Village via Coker in the Ifo/Ibogun axis and made away with a cow.
