Police impound 27 vehicles, prosecute drivers in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has impounded 27 vehicles and prosecuted their drivers for allegedly violating various road traffic regulations as part of its ongoing Operation Velvet aimed at improving road safety across the state.

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Shi’isu Adam.

The PPRO said the operation was being intensified under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, to enforce strict compliance with road traffic laws and regulations across Jigawa State.

According to him, police personnel involved in the operation intercepted and impounded 27 motor vehicles found to have violated relevant traffic laws during the ongoing enforcement exercise.

Adam explained that “the violations recorded included overloading, driving without valid driver’s licences, and the use of unauthorised tinted permits, among other related offences.”

He said the affected motorists were apprehended in accordance with the law, while their vehicles were impounded to facilitate the necessary legal proceedings.

“The suspects were subsequently charged before the appropriate court for prosecution, in line with due process and the provisions of the applicable laws,” the PPRO stated.

The police spokesman stressed that “Operation Velvet was not targeted at any particular individual or group, but was designed to promote discipline among motorists and protect lives and property on the roads.”

Adam therefore urged motorists to always obtain and carry valid driver’s licences, avoid overloading their vehicles and comply with all vehicle registration and roadworthiness requirements.

He also warned motorists against using unauthorised tinted permits, urging them to desist from practices capable of violating traffic regulations and endangering other road users.

Furthermore, the PPRO disclosed that “the operation would continue and be extended to all parts of Jigawa State, including major towns, highways, feeder roads and other strategic locations.”

He called on members of the public to cooperate with police personnel and other relevant agencies during the exercise, assuring law-abiding motorists that “they had nothing to fear.”

Accordingly, the Jigawa police mouthpiece reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring a safe, orderly and secure road environment for residents and other road users across Jigawa State.
