Police arrest man for Qur’an desecration in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, over alleged ritual desecration of the Holy Qur’an in Zuru Local Government Area of the state.

Musa, a resident of Rafin Mose Village, Zuru, was arrested in connection with alleged criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious books, use of spells and hypnosis, and inciting disturbance.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, the incident occurred on August 9, 2026, at about 7pm in the Zango area of Zuru.

The police said preliminary investigation revealed that Musa allegedly conspired with two other suspects, identified as Rabi’u Tela, husband of Zarau Hassan, and Hamza Zango, who are currently at large.

The statement alleged that the suspects dug a pit inside Zarau Hassan’s room and buried a copy of the Holy Qur’an alongside semen, white and red kolanuts, underwear, dead animals and other items described by the police as fetish materials.

The command said the alleged act was intended to make Zarau Hassan “more submissive to her husband, Rabi’u Tela”, adding that the circumstances surrounding the incident were capable of provoking a breach of peace among Muslim faithful in the community.

“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the two fleeing suspects, while Abubakar Musa remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, condemned the alleged act and warned individuals against actions capable of threatening religious harmony and public order.

“The command will deal decisively, within the law, with individuals whose actions threaten religious harmony, public order, and peaceful coexistence,” Hadejia said.
