Pochettino signs new USA contract until 2030 World Cup

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new contract to remain head coach of the United States men’s national team until 2030.

Our correspondent obtained this on Tuesday in a release on the FIFA website, noting that US Soccer announced on Monday.

The Argentine tactician’s previous deal expired after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he guided the United States to the Round of 16 in the tournament they co-hosted.

Announcing the extension, U.S. Soccer Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General JT Batson said the new agreement reflects the federation’s long-term ambitions.

Batson said, “Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States and our new project allows us to build on progress of the USMNT and the momentum of U.S. Soccer.

“We know we have a lot of work to do to achieve our clear ambitions, including competing to win Men’s World Cups and having soccer become the most played sport in every community.

“I couldn’t be more excited that Mauricio and team are committed to partnering with all of us to do the hard work to bring those ambitions to life.”

Pochettino led the Americans to several milestones at the 2026 World Cup, including a record four goals in a World Cup match during a 4-1 victory over Paraguay, multiple group-stage wins for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1930, and a record six points in the group phase.

The United States’ campaign ended with a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, but the team’s performances were widely seen as a step forward under the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager.

The new contract will see Pochettino continue working with emerging talents including Folarin Balogun, Alex Freeman and Malik Tillman while overseeing the development of the next generation of American players.

Reacting to the extension, Pochettino said he and his coaching staff were convinced of the country’s potential to strengthen its football programme.

“Working together with U.S. Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the Men’s National Team program even stronger.

“The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here.

“We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the Federation.

“We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field,” he stated.

Pochettino’s side will begin preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign by competing in the 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League, which begins in September, before turning attention to the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup.
